Big Brothers Big Sisters of Midcoast Maine thanked and recognized the top fundraisers for this year’s Bowl For Kids’ Sake event at two special awards ceremonies held on June 13 and 14, in Rockland and Bangor, respectively. This year’s event generated almost $100,000 to support the agency’s Big/Little matches in Knox, Lincoln, Penobscot and Waldo Counties.
“The revenues raised through this event make it possible for us to run our School-Based and Community-Based Mentoring, which this year has benefited 560 youth in the four counties we serve,” said Big Brothers Big Sisters CEO Alex Gaeth. “This year, 269 teams and more than 1,000 bowlers participated in the event. It is our largest fundraiser of the year,” he says.
On June 13 at the Midcoast Awards Ceremony, event coordinator Cathy Hardy presented the Top Business Fundraiser award to Shawn Doll, Senior Vice President of Bank of America, Belfast, whose participating teams generated over $22,000. They also had the top fundraising team, “The Pin Heads”, captained by Glenn Reed, which raised $1,664.
For Midcoast, the top individual fundraiser was George Sawyer from New Harbor who raised more than $2,200 in pledges. Jennifer Smith, an 11-year old “Little Sister” in the agency’s School-Based Mentoring program at Warren Community School, finished second with $1,675 raised. Smith also won a trophy and a $100 Walmart gift card as the top youth fundraiser.
All Littles who raised $25 or more in pledges and High School Bigs who raised $50 or more in pledges were entered into a raffle drawing to win a $100 Walmart gift card. The winner was Elvis Elliot-Lee, a Little Brother in School-Based Mentoring at the Great Salt Bay School in Damariscotta.
All adult bowlers who raised more than $100 in pledges were entered into the Grand Prize raffle drawing, which was an overnight stay at the Samoset Resort and brunch for 2 at La Bella Vita. The grand prize winner was Tom Dayhoof of Lincolnville.
At the Penobscot County Awards Ceremony held at Family Fun Bowling Center in Bangor, Hannaford Supermarkets was honored as the Top Business Fundraiser, with 19 teams raising almost $5,100.
The top fundraising team for Penobscot County was Bangor Savings Bank’s “Rock ‘n Rollers, captained by Louise Smith, which raised $1,900. Smith was also recognized as the 2nd Highest Individual Fundraiser, raising $1,035. The top Individual Fundraiser was Lisa Tilton also from Bangor Savings Bank, who raised $1,115. Heather Trask, a Big Sister for the agency finished in 3rd place, with $982.
The winner of the Little/Big Raffle drawing was Samantha Johnson of Bangor, a Little Sister in Community-Based Mentoring, who won gift cards to Cadillac Mountain Sports, and the Top Fundraising School was Wagner School in Winterport.
The Grand Prize winner of a BBQ grill donated by Home Depot of Brewer was selected through a raffle drawing of every adult bowler who raised $100 or more in pledges. The winner was Matt Hillary who bowled for Best Buy.
